Accurate, respectful, and easy-to-understand information across all areas of sexual and reproductive health.

Topic 1

Sexual Health Education

Sexual health is a state of physical, emotional, mental, and social well-being in relation to sexuality. It is not merely the absence of disease or dysfunction. Good sexual health requires a respectful and positive approach to sexuality and sexual relationships.

Key Components of Sexual Health

  • Consent: Every sexual activity must be based on mutual, informed, and voluntary consent. Consent must be ongoing and can be withdrawn at any time.
  • Healthy Relationships: Built on mutual respect, open communication, trust, and equality.
  • Prevention: Using condoms, getting tested regularly, and being vaccinated against HPV and Hepatitis B.
  • Access to Care: Everyone has the right to sexual health services, including testing, treatment, and counseling.
Did you know? The World Health Organization (WHO) recognizes sexual health as a fundamental component of overall health and human rights.
Topic 2

Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs)

STIs (also called STDs – sexually transmitted diseases) are infections passed from person to person primarily through sexual contact, including vaginal, anal, and oral sex. Some STIs can also be transmitted through blood or from mother to child during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Common STIs

  • HIV/AIDS
  • Gonorrhea
  • Chlamydia
  • Syphilis
  • Herpes (HSV-1, HSV-2)
  • Human Papillomavirus (HPV)
  • Hepatitis B

Prevention Methods

  • Consistent and correct condom use
  • Regular STI testing
  • Vaccination (HPV, Hepatitis B)
  • Reducing number of sexual partners
  • Open communication with partners
  • PrEP for HIV prevention

Warning Signs

  • Unusual discharge
  • Sores or rashes on genitals
  • Burning sensation during urination
  • Pelvic or abdominal pain
  • Unusual odor
  • Many STIs have NO symptoms — get tested!
✅ Important: Many STIs are treatable, and all are manageable. Early testing and treatment are key. If you think you may have been exposed, book an appointment today.
Topic 3

Reproductive Health

Reproductive health covers the physical, mental, and social aspects of the reproductive system throughout all stages of life. It includes fertility awareness, menstrual health, and access to reproductive healthcare.

The Menstrual Cycle

The average menstrual cycle lasts 21–35 days. Understanding your cycle helps with fertility awareness, identifying irregularities, and overall health tracking.

  • Menstruation: Days 1–5 (shedding of uterine lining)
  • Follicular phase: Days 1–13 (egg development)
  • Ovulation: Around Day 14 (egg released)
  • Luteal phase: Days 15–28 (preparation for pregnancy)

When to See a Doctor

  • Periods that are very heavy or very light
  • Cycles shorter than 21 days or longer than 35 days
  • Severe menstrual pain (dysmenorrhea)
  • Spotting between periods
  • Fertility concerns
  • Symptoms of endometriosis or PCOS
Topic 4

Family Planning

Family planning enables individuals and couples to anticipate and attain their desired number of children, and to determine the spacing and timing of births. It is a right protected under Philippine law (RA 10354).

Benefits of Family Planning

  • Promotes maternal and child health
  • Reduces unintended pregnancies
  • Allows adequate spacing between births (recommended: at least 2 years)
  • Supports educational and economic empowerment of women
  • Contributes to overall family well-being
Philippine Context: Under the RH Law, all Filipinos have the right to information, access, and services related to family planning, including both modern and natural methods.

Topic 6

HIV & AIDS

HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) attacks the body's immune system. Without treatment, it can progress to AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome). However, with modern antiretroviral therapy (ART), people with HIV can live long, healthy lives.

How HIV is Transmitted

  • Unprotected sexual contact
  • Sharing needles or syringes
  • Mother to child (during pregnancy, birth, or breastfeeding)
  • Blood transfusion (rare with modern screening)

How HIV is NOT Transmitted

  • Hugging, shaking hands, or kissing
  • Sharing food or water
  • Mosquito or insect bites
  • Air or water
  • Toilet seats or swimming pools
U=U: "Undetectable = Untransmittable." People with HIV on effective ART who achieve and maintain an undetectable viral load cannot sexually transmit the virus to others.
Topic 7

Prenatal Care

Prenatal care refers to the healthcare you receive during pregnancy. Regular prenatal visits help ensure the health of both mother and baby, identify potential complications early, and prepare for a safe delivery.

Recommended Prenatal Visits (DOH Philippines)

  • First visit: As early as possible, ideally before 12 weeks
  • Monthly visits: Weeks 4–28
  • Every 2 weeks: Weeks 28–36
  • Weekly visits: Week 36 to delivery
